For some time the idea of \u200b\u200bcycling from Madrid to Cáceres was around my head. And when I bought my first bike (a Peugeot road) I was about to do so. My roots Extremadura (although I was born in Madrid, Extremadura and my parents are home in Cáceres) and the desire to ride through the canyons and oak forests of Extremadura have done the rest.
The project took shape when found by chance in the tourist office of the Provincial Council of Cáceres, a project brochure Itinere 1337. From this, I start researching on the Internet and find the website of the Association of Friends Camino Real de Guadalupe , with information the Camino Real.
Although not included in the Ways of Guadalupe, always wanted to do the stretch of the Cañada Real Soriana that leads to Badajoz Cáceres. My father, who is fond of hiking from retirement, has done several times walking the stretch to Puebla de Obando, and the recent signs of Natural Way Corridor Cáceres-Badajoz (which is easy to go by car to Badajoz ) were other spurs. The difficulty of doing it as a route for one day from Cáceres (over 100 miles and back with the bike on the bus) I would back and do the Camino de Guadalupe gave me the opportunity.
By doing, and tell, I meet several objectives: to discover and enjoy Extremadura, "my land" and to publicize another pilgrimage routes in the Iberian peninsula.
Description:
Mountain Bike ride with panniers from Madrid to Badajoz through Talavera de la Reina, Trujillo and Cáceres. The itinerary can be divided into three distinct sections. The first two within the Guadalupe Roads: El Camino Real de Guadalupe (Guadalupe Madrid) and the Way of the Discoverers (Guadalupe, Trujillo, Cáceres). The latter corresponds to the Cañada Real Soriana Western-Canada Sancha Brava (Cáceres-Badajoz).

Profile.
Stages.
stage design has been conditioned by the possibility of finding accommodation easy and affordable, hostel or pension type. In many places there is the possibility of staying in cottages but rather goes traveling alone expensive, still a good option if you travel in groups. Guadalupe
to have been 3 stages (Madrid-Torrijos-Archbishop-Guadalupe Bridge), something really long and hard the first last. I felt like stopping at Talavera de la Reina to know. I have spent thousands of times but have never visited. Remains for the Camino del Tajo. Possibly the best option is to do it in four, which shortens and softens the mileage the last day. Could be: Madrid-Fuensalida-Talavera-Carrascalejo-Guadalupe.
From Guadalupe was intended to reach Trujillo, but the grueling profile made me stop at Madroñera. Before there is only hostel accommodation in Berzocana, too close, and some other house (in the field at Fresno Reservoir and Garziaz).
stop in Caceres seems bound to visit the city. Worthwhile. Also, in my case I have the facility of having home.
De Cáceres Badajoz, its about 100 miles of flip makes getting to be quite demanding. Find hostels in Villar del Rey and left the last 35 miles and return to the last day.
Thus have been:
01. Madrid-Torrijos.
02. Torrijos-Puente del Obispo.
03. Bishop-Guadalupe Bridge.
05. Madroñera-Cáceres.
C. Natural Way Corridor Cáceres-Badajoz.

06. Cáceres-Villar del Rey.
07. Villar del Rey-Badajoz.

Longest Day: in distance has been Archbishop Torrijos-Bridge, 95 miles. Guadalupe-time was 7 hours Madroñera with pedaling.
Best day: As with other trips is difficult to keep one. I'll take the tour of Extremadura with its hills and oak woods.
Worst day: Madroñera Guadalupe. Tough day, with nearly 2,000 vertical meters accumulated, and in bad weather (just soaked by a heavy shower of rain near Garciaz. Even so, I enjoyed it.
Worst headache: None in particular.
Mayor error: Too optimistic preparation stages. Villuercas The days were really tough.
unexpected surprise: wealth we have, sometimes forgotten, of having a dense network of trails, which can go and enjoy the English nature. On this trip I had some amazing natural events: A black stork, a terrapin and several groups of geese.
miss: A good companion with whom to carpool.
Physical problems: None.
Mechanical problems: none Graves. I broke one of the cameras for a llantazo. Trying to repair it, and then several unsuccessful attempts, I realized that the glue has an expiration date.
Accidents: None.
Orientation: I've had no problem with previous work guidance and help of GPS. In association roadbook ACRG the Camino Real de Guadalupe no loss. Furthermore, although not abundant, white arrows also serve as support, confirming that it was going fine. The Natural Way-Badajoz Cáceres Corredor has recently been clearly marked. Only at one point, coming to Trujillo, I had to improvise, since the road was blinded by vegetation.

Accommodation: has always been at hotels and hostels, trying to choose as far as economically possible. The cottages are discarded traveling alone. Average price € 23, the most expensive hotel Madroñera (36 €). In Cáceres I have the advantage of staying with my parents.
Power: always carry a light for the path (dried fruit or energy bars). Always as well once a day (Lunch or dinner menu), for the rest shot supermarket. To carry a Camelback water 2 liters.

baggage weight: Saddlebags: 9.5 kg Bike: 14.3 kg
Trip Round Trip: To get to Madrid from Getafe use Renfe Cercanias .
Very good the first few days and the last. Getting to Guadalupe cloudy but no rain.
Roads: Nearly 100% of the course are depressed cattle trails. Mostly driving on track and rail, with the asphalt almost anecdotal. Little trail, but neither is missing, since many of the lanes are very rarely used, seeing reduced to two shot. In the provinces of Madrid and Toledo are quite "pistorro" Wheeler. But in Extremadura, the tracks are more "natural" and in many cases are little more than ruts through the vegetation. Two sections of trail Trialeras limited cyclability: the decline of the Port of Arrebatacapas and the Way of Isabella the Catholic. In the remainder, only cyclability can be compromised by the presence of muddy water ponds or hollows of the roads.
Terrain: Very smooth the early days (and Las Vegas La Sagra del Tajo and Alberche) and last (for the plains of Trujillo and Cáceres, and the Sierra de San Pedro). Truly devastating in its passage through the mountains of Villuercas, Jara and Ibores. Ports short but very hard to ramp very strong across the Sierra de Altamira, the Madril and Villuercas.
suitable season: Spring and autumn . Both in Toledo and in Extremadura, pedals by areas with very hot dry summers, and winters are quite cold. Please note that after heavy rains, water accumulated on roads and fording the seasonal streams can cause problems.
Some considerations for cyclists The route follows a route designed for walkers so it includes sections in which we may be forced to dismounting and pushing, because of the difficulty of the terrain or slope. The most difficult road variants have no traffic so the choice is up to you.
Useful Files: To achieve the trip I prepared a series documents and files that can be useful for future bikers to be making the trip. You can download Megaupload . These include: an overview map of Camino Real de Guadalupe, useful to include the kilometric distances between key locations, the road book of the Camino Real de Guadalupe the ACRG, Madrid Guadalupe; maps for the whole journey to take in the handle, obtained from the provincial maps, the profile of the route to use as a reference for miles and downs. I also include the file. Gdb carrying loaded into the GPS for the trip, including some variants (Oropesa, the Path Jara and the Way of Toledo).
