Lana II. Cuenca and Guadalajara. Road

Cuenca-Salmerón-Mandayona-Retortillo de Soria.

04. Cuenca-Salmerón.

Date: 20/04/2011 .
Dist: 78.23 km ; Asc.: 855 m.; T. Tot.: 6:58; T. Mov.: 5:10.

H. Departure: 8:33 ; H. Arrival: 15:34.

The toughest day so far, fatigue will accumulating and uncertainty about the time it strikes. Long Leg, nearly 80 miles and close to 850 m. promotion. The first part of the stage with some broken profile that ends with the ascent to the Collado del Puerto in the Sierra de Bascuñana in the Serrania de Cuenca The second, with a long descent into the valley of the river Trabaque, ending with the ascent Guadiela from the river, the Alto de la Fuente del Borro.

The firm mostly acceptable track (luckily the rains of yesterday have left a lot of mud) but there are two long runs on the local road without traffic (Cuenca-Tondo 15 km. And Albendea-Valdeolivas of 7 km. .) Much of the tracks are roads that are crossed concentration agraria con firme arcilloso que pueden presentar muchos problemas en caso de lluvia.

Después de cruzar Bascuñana San Pedro, continue along a track in very good condition amounts to Collado de la Villa by the valley formed by the Arroyo de la Virgen on the peaks of the Sierra de Bascuñana (Losar and Cruceta). Completed the ascent, the second decline "disfrutón" of the Wool Road, 4 miles fast, with good firm, a ravine that tapers. Part of the route matches the PR-CU-41 (from near the harbor, passing by the Fuente del Gallo, until the Corchillo). The slope decreases to reach Cerralbo River valley, which we Torralba.

By the river Albalate

Torralba Leaving the road (asphalted) leading to the shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, and before her, under the imposing silhouette of the Torre Alba, turn right to continue along a farm road that runs along the river valley to Albalate Albalate of Nogueras. Here the river flows into the Trabaque Albalate, for which we vega Trabaque Villaconejos of entering through the Ermita de la Concepción, after crossing the bridge over the Trabaque. Should you find mud can make roads (CM-210 and CM-310) that connect the three locations.

A output Villaconejos we Valdeolivas Road, rising to the Collado del Endrinal, we left for another road leading to a small landfill. To the northeast, we see Priego, its hills and the narrow entrance to Bete and Serrania de Cuenca Alta . A short descent puts us back in the plain of Trabaque.

Serrania de Cuenca Priego near

After a few meters down the road CUV-9001, we left along a trail that climbs the hill of the tanks and down through the ravine of the Valladares (stretch very bonito), linking to another track, in search of Guadiela river crossing. It seems difficult because the river runs between two cliffs embedded about 25 feet high, but after a few meters, see the place where the bridge down by the ford to cross.

Villaconejos Road to Valdeolivas

Ahead lies the final climb of the day at Alto de la Fuente del Borro (10 km and 250 m promotion). We left the Guadiela, tracing and track the Barranco del Arroyo del Val, hit the road for CM-2023 that will take us through Albendea, to Valdeolivas . The road is in the process of expansion, already well advanced, so any signal trace has disappeared. Although no traffic, the seven miles I do quite heavy. The guide describes a variant that avoids the asphalt, but threw away not being very clear and include cross-country sections.

Valdeolivas Reaching leave the "suckling pig" of a smaller road and "friendly" by which, on the rise (ramp very hard at this time of day), we enter the population. A plaque notes that the church is dedicated to Saints Quirico and Julita, which reminds me good time I spent in San Quirico d'Orcia, in Tuscany by the Via Francigena. Valdeolivas On leaving the province of Cuenca leave and to enter into the Serrania de Guadalajara Alcarria.

Valdeolivas

There are still a few meters from Valdeolivas climb up high, but they are good clue (Camino Viejo de Valdeolivas) and the rising sun I get quite lively. The countryside is stunning with the contrast of green and brown tones very intense. With Salmon enjoy the view of declining among the oaks, with an eye on tomorrow's ascent to the shrine of St. Matthias. Now to find accommodation.

Valdeolivas Camino Viejo de Salmeron

In the Plaza Mayor asked a man who is repairing the facade of his home, the Corner Bar ( long closed), or any accommodation (hostel also closed) and tells me to ask at the Bar El Cazador, where you can find the mayor.

The Bar The Hunter is run by the current mayor who has received in the social center (floor and bathrooms). His family accepts pilgrims at home (not a hotel). Very close and friendly treatment. De the most demanding of all the Wool Road, at 1,000 m. climb in less than 70 km, and above all the sections of trail (reaching Mondejar Viana, Viana by tits and down from Mirabueno). Not many miles but includes sections on foot (the slope, the ground or by vegetation) in there to push. Virtually no asphalt, slopes, agricultural roads and rails. Two very tough climbs earlier in the day, the first since Salmeron to the Hermitage of San Matías (with 4.5 km. And 300 m climb), and the second from Mondejar by Viana Viana Tits (short but and difficult path.) We ended the day with two very long but gentle climb (going up Cifuentes from the river Tagus, and passage through the plains Alcarrian by circulating the National II.

Care weather, as the firm clay of the tracks, can turn into real traps, sticky mud. There are alternative local road. Signage pretty good (for the municipality of spectacular Trillo) throughout the course. Over time they have been avoiding sections that were previously done by road (Trillo-Cifuentes and Moranchel-Mirabueno). Unfortunately, I think the "battle" with the passage of Palositos Villaescusa is lost. It is best to follow the arrows to avoid the farm to avoid problems such as the gate lock. Sunrise

more clear than clouds presaging a good day to ride, even there are times when passing heat. To the west the approach of a storm that will complicate the time, especially in the west mainland, but has not arrived here yet. In any case if you suffer the consequences of the rains.

Salmerón up to the Ermita de San Matías

Leaving Salmerón taking a track that goes next to the church, coming down the Arroyo de San Juan, to up to the Ermita de San Matías (4.5 Km and 300 m. promotion). Difficult and in itself (slopes of 13%), for me will be one of the hardest moments of the route. The little rain in the evening, not too muddy, its surface has become a sticky mass that adheres to the wheels until they lock. All will increase the foot with mud clogs on his feet and stopping every so often to help clear the wheels. In total just over an hour (and a glove lost in the process) of penance.

Adjoining the ruins of the Chapel of St. Matthew (which I did not find it) ends up and improving the track, for which he can ride, but there is a bad stretch. On the plain, we connect with the rail Escamilla to Peralveche. First signs of "Private Villa. No Trespassing" on the sides. When you reach a crossroads with a yellow container, turn left onto the track leading to Villaescusa de Palositos.

Lane near Villaescusa couple

Left behind San Román House came to a fork: the left, the road passing Escamilla's Villaescusa Palositos and on the right, the couple Lane, which borders the farm. I follow the yellow arrows for the latter to avoid problems. I think that even in the courts, it is sad that private property impound public roads and come to prevent the passage of a people.

to the entrance to the estate (which I found locked with a padlock) on the track surface can give many problems with the mud. I met him just at the limit. After these days I have expanded my knowledge of "Pottery", analyzing the type of substrate, humidity and rainfall probabilities (rapidly changing) to find the mud problem.

column water vapor. Trillo Nuclear Power

Possible variants: from Salmerón can continue on local roads with little traffic (up Peralveche CM-2015 and CM-2115 until Mondejar Viana), and from the yellow drum can go straight to hit the CM-2115 near Peralveche.

Following a trail of access to Villaescusa, it no longer has problems with the water vapor column of the Trillo nuclear power plant on the horizon, we arrived at the Dehesa de las Parras, entering the town of Trillo , whose council has placed buoys and information panels throughout the course of the Wool Road.

Descent into Arroyo de las Porras

With the silhouette of the Tetas de Viana in sight, we jump the track-rail (caution sign something stony) along the Arroyo de Porras. Shortly before arriving at the Arroyo de la Solana signaling offers two possibilities. The variant cycle which can continue on the track to the CM-2053 road leading to Mondejar Viana (recommend). And the option for hikers who follow a trail, climb a small hill and the slope of Mogorron continues to Viana. On the trail, you have to do enough legs to walk pushing the bike (up the hill down the slope, and in the fall, to be quite closed by vegetation, with gorse, some pants are not bad-).

Trail near Viana
Mondejar

From Viana Mondejar to Cifuentes, the Ruta de la Lana coincides with the route described by Camilo José Cela his book "Journey to the Alcarria." Highly recommended route to hear the Alcarria and can be done by mountain bike (Trek Alcarria MTB).

The beginning of the journey between Viana and Trillo has two variants (one for walkers and other cyclists). For bikes, a track that goes from town to Cerrillo de las Cruces. The walkers Viana leaving the track that rises to the Tetas de Viana (coincides with the SL-2 Sendero Camino del Collado , highly recommended excursion - description of Sarita and Mane), we left a trail Tits and borders the east. The trail has very nice legs cycling trails (especially at the beginning and end), interrupted by inciclables areas (steep slope, very stony and craggy areas.)

Tetas de Viana
Path alongside

Exceeded the slope, the two options are attached to descend along the Trillo SL-1 Path Way Viana. Cyclable covered nearly one hundred percent (somewhere in there to take the foot down) very fun and engaging, with the impressive skyline of chimneys (they actually heat sinks) of the nuclear plant. Now for asphalt, from the motocross circuit, crossed the Tagus entering Trillo.

Descent Trillo

Cifuentes From Trillo route avoids the road (before he was going for it) following a series of farm roads well marked, that run Cifuentes of the river valley. It is worth mentioning that near Gargoyle Below is a stretch of 200 meters, where the track disappears under a freshly plowed patch. Must be traced to walk a few yards, connecting with a rail in a bad state that brings us back to the track we had. Gargoyles Leaving Top , crossed the N-204 along the Camino de las Viñas rising to the Hermitage of San Blas, Cifuentes to enter after crossing residential.

Tetas de Viana
Central Nuclear de Trillo

From Cifuentes to Las Inviernas Wool Road coincides with the route of the GR 10 . Cifuentes definitely leave the river, and a paved road near the cemetery, we headed Moranchel. On the dirt track we arrived at the Alto de la Cabaña Honda, which ends its long climb that brought us since we crossed the river in Trillo, to descend the Prado Road Bottom Moranchel and the river Tajuña.

Although prior to the journey from Moranchel was The Winter Road (as described by the guide), it may well prevent the asphalt along the route of the GR 10 (Bornem in wikiloc ). Leaving Moranchel crossed the Tajuña and we are the GU-922. To the right leads to the Winter while the yellow arrows and the GR indicated on the left. For about 250 meters down the road we follow, abandoning the Masegoso of Tajuña Road (track in good condition) that the Arroyo del Prado back to a small hill, Head of the Car, and down The Inviernas .

Between The Winter Mirabueno

On the Way to Las Inviernas Mirabueno, ascend to the plain along which Alcarrian Nacional II Madrid-Barcelona. Along with the Cañada Real Soriana , crossed over the path and continue AVE on the moor to Mirabueno. After all day of good weather, the horizon has been dyed black, surrounded by heavy storms in front and behind. One of them, with their thick curtain of rain, I just reached from the east. In anticipation I pushed the move to seek refuge in the service area of \u200b\u200b107 km of national book but I do not get wet.

Mirabueno

After 20 minutes finally subsides and continue by road to Mirabueno , located in a kind of balcony on the river Henares. A small path (Narrow and wedged between the vegetation, with a stretch on foot but quite cyclable) saves about two miles in the 200 meter drop Mandayona that separate us from the banks of the Rio Dulce. To the east you can see Aragosa and the entrance to the Rio Dulce Canyon.

Going to Mandayona

He intended to reach Atienza (36 km) but decided to stay and sleep in Mandayona (very stormy afternoon many miles ahead). Coming into the village asked the Bar Miracles, where call by telephone to the mayor, who takes me to Social Center where I will sleep.

Accommodation: Welcome pilgrim in the Social Centre (floor and toilet, ask for the mayor). Hostal Castilla Rural Summit has closed and no other housing options. Tapas dinner at Bar Miracles. Vodafone Coverage really bad, you can only connect at the top of the village.

Home pilgrim:
- Viana Mondejar: Pilgrims Refuge opened in 2010.
- Trillo: municipal pilgrims Refuge Opened in 2010.
- Cifuentes: Hostel City (a few kilometers from the village).

Other Lodging:

stage lasts for almost 60 miles and 1,000 m. ascent, with no major ports but trend upwards most of the day, culminating in the ascent to the Sierra del Buleje. Many miles of asphalt (about 20 km. Between Baides and Riofrio del Llano, and 20 km. Between Atienza and Retortillo) that rain to be grateful. Among Baides Viana Jadraque and following the arrows left the road and ended up blocked by the mud.

is the worst stretch in terms of signaling what I want to make some observations about my trip:
- Leaving Mandayona: In preparing the route at home, with the description of the guidelines, was very clear where he was going. From Mandayona shooting arrows appear to upstream. Finally I've made in the Houses of the match, but there was no arrow until I started the descent towards the road GU-149.
- Between Baides and Huermeces del Cerro: From Baides to Viana Jadraque we draw arrows from the asphalt to follow a path unclear, in my opinion adds nothing to that is walking, and is a real nuisance for those who go by bike. I understand that people go down the road. The variation from Viana to Huermeces looks better (looks like a farm road along the river Salado) but I tried after earlier fiasco.
- Between Riofrio del Llano and Atienza: Arrows save a chunk of road for a stretch it nice and quiet, but until we take the road of Cardeñosa orientation is difficult sections.
- De Atienza Atienza Miedes: Pilgrims and information will follow guidelines the road and Alpedroches Tordella. I did not see a single arrow in the whole journey. I have a feeling that has changed the route following the same as the Camino del Cid, for Romanillos Atienza, almost no asphalt and the same distance . I seem a good idea but I can not confirm.
- The rise on fears of Atienza: Although no path, I opted for the road directly to get rid of a good time to "empujing." If when I did the Camino del Cid him down, this time not going to rise.
In short, starting from the initial design, described in the guidance of Jesus and Peter Malavia couple eventually signaling has been seeking alternatives for walkers unpaved takes time to mature.

Sunrise "dodgy", it appears that today will not be the best day. Finally, the day will be cloudy and rain quite a bit, but not be so bad. Mandayona I leave without breakfast (bars and shops closed) thing I can do to Atienza. It seems that the arrows sent upstream, the mayor told me yesterday that he was valuing send the Wool Road and Dulce River Canyon to Sigüenza, as does Camino del Cid . I continue with my plan.

Descending from the Houses of the match

Near the church cross the Rio Dulce and took a track (rather rarely used with some mud) that goes up the Houses of Baides Matches. After a while I see no arrow, but it is a matter of return, so he continued. On reaching the house, I follow the access road to the farm road toward the GU-149, but soon after, turn left connecting with a track (some loose rock) that also falls to the same but shorter . In the fall meeting the first yellow arrow. And road, and calmer after the moment of doubt, finished the descent to the river and entered Henares Baides .

A Baides output next to the Ermita de la Soledad, the arrows leaving the road on the Way to Sigüenza. Bad time it occurred to me. At 800 m to leave the track and continue along a path embedded in a gully by the Arroyo de las Canadas. Very difficult to move forward with the bike, I cross country, and what looks like a road crosses a small hill, to go to a track that descends Jadraque Viana. Conclusion: everything on foot and bicycle loamy clay stuck by a white. In Viana, near a fountain, remove all the mud I can and I promise to continue along the road.

mud Result

On the road continued to pleasantly GU-149 following the Salt River to Huermeces del Cerro, which is under the Loma del Lituero. Salt left the company after overcoming narrow (short ramp) that has carved between Lituero and Peña Alta, to continue, now accompanied by the river Regacho, to Santiuste.

Huermeces About Cerro

Santiuste From Highway GU-148 (renamed from Huermeces) climbs a bit to overcome the Arroyo del Tejar, leading to the CM-101 (slightly wider and a little more traffic) leading to Atienza. The ledge ends near the turnoff to Cardeñosa and slightly down we Riofrio del Llano. Moment of doubt, continue on the asphalt or try your luck with the state of the track.

Reaching Atienza

the end I decided to leave the road. A track that comes out of Riofrio, connects directly Cardeñosa Road (perhaps the best decision), but the arrows lead us elsewhere. In a zig-zag tracks and lanes, with a simple cross-country flight and a little stretch marked, finally comes to Cardeñosa way that leads us seamlessly to Atienza. Despite some rain when the stretch is very beautiful among the oaks, without many problems of mud (the firm is While stretches of sandy shale). See the silhouette appear stepfather and castle worth Atienza.

Atienza

Entering Atienza fortunate encounter, the first and only encounter with bicigrinos, a couple that I think come from Alicante along the route of the Lana. We parted after a few words of encouragement, they come to San Esteban de Gormaz, I have breakfast and check the rear derailleur (the last mile has been clogging due to dried mud.)

After breakfast and clean up a little bike, I decided to make the miles that separate me Atienza fears of road. I have a feeling that signaling leads to another path (there are some fairly clear Delcher, near the Arc de Arrebatacapas, indicating in the opposite direction) but is safe and easy option. For the CM-110 to Tordella and CM-1005 by Alpedroches to Miedes Atienza.

Going on fears of Atienza

Atienza on fears of return to find the yellow arrows next to the red and white GR-160 Camino del Cid , which together lead to Retortillo a path that climbs the Sierra del Buleje . Had already decided that I would not do the trail. Road is a port with all the development, climbs with ease and enjoy the scenery. That he will do, even the purist like me has its weaknesses.

Atienza Miedes

change Overcome autonomous port, leaving Castilla-La Mancha (Guadalajara) to enter Castilla y León (Soria). A short descent, along with the mills of the Sierra de Pela at full capacity, to enter Soria Retortillo . Good place to stage and be able to face tomorrow Caracena Canyon rested.

Sollera Gate. Soria Retortillo

Lodging: Hostal The Wall . 18 € (shared bathroom). I already knew the hostel and I slept on it when I passed by the Camino del Cid. Comfortable and nice treatment. Although they feed me late for lunch. Festivals and weekends are no menu. encotraba Impossible coverage of Vodafone, just calling from the payphone in the hostel bar.

Home pilgrim:
- Baides: The council usually leaves the Social Centre (large hall, floor and toilet).
- Atienza: The council usually leaves the municipal swimming pools or a cottage.

Other Lodging:
- Huermeces del Cerro: Albergue Rural El Molino.
- Atienza: Pension Fonda Miller, Hostal El Mirador and Hostal El Mirador II.
