III Ruta de la Lana. For Soria and Burgos at EveryTrail

07. Soria-Quintanarraya Retortillo.

Date: 23/04/2011 .
Dist: 74.27 km ; Asc.: 690 m.; T. Tot.: 8:17; T. Mov.: 5:11.
H. Max.: 1287 m.; V. Med Mov.: 13.4 km / h; IBP.: 69BC .
H. Output: 9:27; H. Arrival: 17:47 .

Stage rather quiet, rather long (about 75 miles) with little cumulative altitude (700 meters). Largely declining trend, punctuated by a steep slope can not be called port. Greatly expanded sections of asphalt (Retortillo-Tarancueña, Caracena Caracena-Fresno, Olmillos-San Esteban de Gormaz and Soria-Alcubilla Massacre of Avellaneda, totaling about 40 km) provided by local road without traffic. The most spectacular, and also the most difficult to pedal, they are just over 4 miles of trail through the Canyon of Caracena. Although there is a simpler variant of Valderromán Cañicera and is highly recommended, if you do not mind pushing the bike throw. Includes sections on foot and forced a highlight where you have to load the bike, but the beauty of the place and the areas where you can ride worthwhile.

generally well marked in places where necessary. Not sure of the route between Ines and San Esteban de Gormaz, since coming to Olmillos lost the yellow arrows. I imagine that eventually will appear variants take out the asphalt road, as with the stretch of San Esteban Soria Gormaz-Killing.

not up early today, the bar opens at 9:15, taking breakfast and enjoy the soil bed after Mandayona. Sunrise a little better after the unsettled weather of the last two days. Walk out the door Sollera, Retortillo symbol, to the Ermita de la Virgen del Prado, before returning to the road SO-135 that leads to Tarancueña. Leaving the Camino del Cid , we brought Miedes of Atienza and comes in Berlanga de Duero, and the GR 86 Sendero Iberian Soriano, in Soria Retortillo step in their journey of Brias to Tiermes. The road is very quiet with a small ledge to overcome the Altos de la Cogo.

Altos de la Cogolludo

In Tarancueña begins one of the most spectacular sections of the entire route of the Wool: Caracena Canyon. The trail continues for about 4 miles the canyon formed by the river Caracena from Tarancueña to Caracena. Difficulties: but comfortable walking legs to push the bike and some highlight where you have to throw the bike on your shoulder. Although there is a yellow arrow, are more practical the red and white GR 86 Sendero Iberian Soriano (Lausanne-Caracena Bypass). Taracena a track that goes to The Mill (ruins), places us at the entrance of the canyon, in which we move along a path quite clear.

Caracena Arriving at Canyon

The first few miles are offered to pedal harder (without weight and sporting plan can do much on the bike, I prefer to enjoy the scenery and I do walk). After passing under the Eagle Rock is a good piece that can be pedaled. And near the canyon's narrow Tondo under towering walls and makes a curious compliment. Appears to us an amazing rock arch under which we must pass.

Caracena Canyon

From this point, it's all cyclable, but a step where the path is embedded between river and a ledge (there are some stones to spend that if the river carries a lot of water may be hidden). Near the end, appears on a rocky silhouette of the church of Santa Maria, where you have to climb after a sharp ramp that takes us out of the canyon. In Caracena worth climbing for a few yards closer to the Romanesque church of San Pedro (to visit available at the bar).

Caracena

The next 10 kilometers, Carrascosa de Abajo and Caracena Fresno can be made by the quiet road SO -V-1601 Caracena accompanied by the river, although arrows signaled some off-road segment. Second meeting with pilgrims near Carrascosa, with a couple of pilgrims who come on foot from Cuenca Cuenca.

Caracena Leaving Fresno, shortly after crossing the Manzanares River, we left the tarmac on a track that leads to Ines (without tilde increased in the i). Well marked, though in a bifurcation may be some doubt (the two roads are falling to Arroyo Valdín, which went out after a hard ledge).

Way Fresno Caracena Ines

From Ines to San Esteban de Gormaz guides describe the tour of the road SO-P-4216 through Olmillos. The arrows on the outskirts of Ines, I have on the Way to San Esteban (track in good condition), but Olmillos reaching the lost, so I continue by road (I saw no signs) along the Douro River, we passed by Roman bridge (by the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental save the Duero) before entering San Esteban de Gormaz . We passed

San Esteban de Gormaz

In San Esteban de Gormaz we crossed the elusive Camino del Cid (from Castillejo de Robledo and heads to El Burgo de Osma) abandoned on Retortillo de Soria and recover in Alcubilla de Avellaneda. The castle is a bit far, but we can approach the two interesting Romanesque churches, Our Lady of San Miguel Rivero, on the outskirts of San Esteban.

solecito Lively and I encourage you to try an alternative to prevent the asphalt of the SO-V-9700 which leads to Killing Soria. After crossing the N-122 and the Arroyo del Torderón, take the track leading to a landfill (monofills for lead smelting slag takes longer) following the valley of the Arroyo Puentón. The track continues without problems, including fields to Killing Soria (I find an arrow close to the village).

between San Esteban de Soria Gormaz and Killing

Of Killing Alcubilla de Avellaneda Soria to the longest road stretch of days with 14 miles. We only briefly SO-V-9621 to enter in Villálvaro . Fortunately the road is fairly quiet and with very little traffic. Two rolling hills, leaving Villálvaro and ending at the turnoff to Zayuelas, and from Zayas Bascones to leave the river valley Perales.

Alcubilla de Avellaneda in to arrange the Camino del Cid, which will serve as a reference signal to Quintanarraya. Leaving Alcubilla have one of the most demanding steep slopes of the stage, more at this point the day after nearly 70 miles to exit Pildo River valley, which is made by court in not so good, somewhat rocky with some hard ramp .

Hinojar Descent of King

The climb ends with the Corrales del Roble between a beautiful juniper. In the distance and can distinguish the Peñas de Cervera that await us tomorrow. We only have a pleasant descent down the Road to Hinojar Alcubilla King, in the province of Burgos, and a short steep slope that exceeds Alto Redondo, to enter Quintanarraya .

Quintanarraya
Reaching

What happens then is a flash that leads me to make two comments: the spirit of hospitality to pilgrims, still alive, and that there is still much good people with nothing in return, is ready to lend a hand to someone in need.

The Social Centre tells me that sleeping in the shelter of pilgrims I have to talk to Mr. Theodore. After asking around, finally I find Montse (I think she is the daughter of Theodore), but do not see the keys (some girls in town yesterday and slept not know where they are). A very nice group of neighbors working in their search. Meanwhile, concerned about the issue of the dinner (in the Social Centre bar are not quite ready for the work of something) ask for a store. One of the neighbors told me that there is, and brings me fruit along with some delicious French toast, which I literally saves my life. And finally, unable to find coverage, Montse me looking for a phone you can send a message home.

From here, I take to give my sincere appreciation to the residents of Quintanarraya their treatment. Thank you.

Accommodation: municipal shelter pilgrims. Former home of teachers, who also used to store, converted into a hostel for pilgrims and people who do the Camino del Cid. A little shabby. Has mattresses and shower (do not know if it works the heater). Ask for Mr. Teodoro (living in the house next door). People turned to the pilgrims. And unfortunately no store in the Social Centre bar are not much work to make dinner.

Home pilgrim:
- Tarancueña: Possible local host.
- Fresno Caracena: Home City (store next to City Hall ground without toilets but they're embellishing.)
- San Esteban de Gormaz: possible host parish (floor and toilet, ask for the Father Fortunato), the often leave the sports hall.

Other Lodging:
- Tarancueña: Casa Rural Los Arrènes .
- San Esteban de Gormaz: Moreno Hostel and Hotel Rivera del Duero .

short, with just over 50 kilometers, and a cumulative altitude acceptable, about 700 m. Smooth profile but something broken no significant ports. At the beginning of the day we played a very gradual climb to Alto del Horno, among Pinarejos and Mamolar. And in the end will have to face some steep slopes across the valley Arlanza. There are more asphalt would like to nearly 35 miles but there are few options to avoid it. The first (Huerta de Rey-Peñacoba) very quiet, the second (Val-Mecerreyes Santibanez of the BU-901), with more traffic, without being excessive, it takes away some charm.

signaling As I have found is quite irregular, I would like to make some comments about the route:
- between King and Peñacoba Huerta, you can avoid much of the asphalt along the Camino del Cid, but when I suffered many hardships (unmarked sections, areas where the road is lost and orientation is very difficult) I recommend only the most adventurous. In any case the road is so quiet, I think the best option. I'm not sure where to go the yellow arrows and I saw really few.
- De Peñacoba to Santo Domingo de Silos, in my opinion the best option (with signs), is to follow the Camino del Cid along the old road Santo Domingo. There is a section where the firm is Dead (very rocky and very loose rock) but fortunately it is short. This is offset by the wildness of the place. Easier it is to continue along the road through the gorge of Yecla.
- From Santo Domingo de Silos have gone for the BU-911 until the Yecla Gorge (worth the detour to traverse through a series of bridges and gateways). Then you can continue on the Camino de Santa Cecilia (signposted and track), passing through the Mozarabic chapel of Santa Cecilia and arrives at the Val Santibanez.
- finally say that there is the possibility of avoiding the road section BU-901, from Santo Domingo de Silos, following the Camino del Cid to Covarruvias. If we went by Santibanez del Val also can connect with him in Retuerta. Know with yellow arrows. Disadvantage: does not pass through the gorge of Yecla.

At first, I get up and raining hard. Fireworks, because even very cloudy day will get better without the rain. The concern of the mud is now lower because I expect many miles of road. The fruit that yesterday gave me a very kind lady returns to be my salvation when they leave the bar is closed. Hanging on the doorknob of the hostel I find a bag with generous sandwich serrano ham, promised last night by a civilian.

Although water has fallen, try your luck coming out of Quintanarraya, following the arrows (and signaling to Pinarejos Camino del Cid) by Mary Wolf Road and Camino de las Estobas to Huerta de Rey . Rather heavy track but right on the border ready to stick to the wheels.

Arroyo
By Arandilla

After breakfast and calmer, I face the next miles safe from the mud road, first by the C-111 to turn left onto the road BU-V-9216 of Pinarejos. I have certainly not going to try the variant of the Camino del Cid , and continue to Mamolar. The lonely road crossing the pine rising through the Pinarejos Recreation Area (on the route where there are several simple huts for shelter) to rise to the Puerto del Horno, to descend to Mamolar .

Oven
from Eagle Rock High

Mamolar part of an asphalt road, under the walls of the Peña del Águila, carried Peñacoba . Before we turn right to reach a track that follows the river Peñacoba, entering through a narrow cutting the Peñas de Cervera, passage of highway and only access to silos from the south, before opening the tunnel of Yecla.

Peña del Águila

Passed the narrowest part, let the right track for a pretty bad track (the final rocky and lots of loose rock makes it difficult to pedal), and after a short and hard slope, by Berrocal the holy places us on a hill above Santo Domingo de Silos . The bells of the monastery, already heard a little earlier, greeted my arrival. Downward spiral (caution since the slope is very steep and there is loose rock) to enter Santo Domingo de Silos by the Puerta de San Juan.

Santo Domingo de Silos

breakfast for the second time, I'm a little "dog" for the frugal dinner yesterday. There comes a moment of decision. I take a couple of laps looking for an arrow that does not meet expected. I decide for the option of Santibanez, visiting the Gorge Yecla (I felt like last time). Walk out the BU-902 Covarrubias direction and at the roundabout follow direction La Yecla. On the way I see a yellow arrow at the entrance to the Camino de Santa Cecilia.

The diversion, a little over a mile, it is worth. A series gateways and bridges for about 600 meters walk the Yecla Gorge , a narrow and deep gorge excavated in Peñas de Cervera. There is a staircase to the entrance and another at the exit of the two tunnels of the BU-991-Caleruela Silos. Neither intentéis do with the bike with saddlebags because there are stretches narrower than the width of the handlebar.

Yecla Gorge

Back on the Wool Road, follow the Way of Santa Cecilia accompanied by the river Mataviejas. Shortly before we met Val Santibanez of the beautiful Mozarabic chapel of Santa Cecilia. We find signaling PRC-120 BU Path of the Chapels.

Peñas de Cervera up the Alto de Pedernales

Already Santibanez take the road by the BU-902 that reaches Covarrubias. First we have to overcome two small ports, one at the foot of Alto de Pedernales (2.5 km and 130 m climb) to reach Retuerta, and another to overcome the Horse (1.3 km and 60 m. promotion) to descend to Covarrubias. On the descent to Retuerta Aitor I meet, which is doing the Camino del Cid and after a bad shot with the mud out of Vivar del Cid, has decided to throw on the road. It is always a joy to find a fellow sufferer.

Tower Fernán González. Covarrubias

In Covarrubias, after a brief meeting with a couple of Basque riders (a couple who have made the road trip along the Camino del Cid and go back to Burgos) and eat the ham sandwich, I prepare to face the last day rise Covarrubias cairn (2.5 km and 120 m climb). Shortly before entering Mecerreyes in the Alto del Crucero, we find the monument to the Cid.

Mecerreyes El Cid near

Burgos is a little over 35 miles, but I decided to stay in Mecerreyes. Will very timely for two reasons: the magnificent lodge and enjoyed the great dinner at the Meson de Frutos (Iberian source, salad, a huge source of grilled chops, lemon mousse and coffee). The care was excellent. I have only words of gratitude for the good times spent in the company of guiletos.

Accommodation: City Lodge "The Crow." € 5. 5 Star Hostel, newly opened in 2010 for the Camino del Cid also welcome pilgrims. One of the best hostels that I know, 21 beds, large bathrooms, fitted kitchen and great room. Modern but well restored. Dinner at Meson de Frutos , economic and eats very well, highly recommended but is only open on weekends.

very simple, with less than 40 miles and smooth profile to get Burgos early and enjoy the city in the afternoon. For agricultural roads to BOCOG, where it joins the Greenway Santander-Mediterranean Railway , which we entered Burgos.

In Hontoria the Quarry there are several possibilities for accessing Burgos.

Overcome the slope, we left the track for another in worse condition (may have problems with mud) that borders the farm house Monte Negredo along the fence.

Mecerreyes and Hontoria
Among the Quarry

After the farm, we definitely Camino del Cid (in his journey from the monastery of San Pedro Cardeña) for a lane out on the road BU-V-90-12, take right. About 700 meters after a track (in good condition), which goes left, cross the river beetles (step on a wheel abandoned tractor) and leads to the Quarry Hontoria .

With the decision to continue the greenway, leaving Hontoria and after crossing the N-234, take a track (in good condition but no yellow arrows), which through the Ermita de Santa Isabel, is in Revillarruz direction along the river Saelices. Moment of doubt, the right track crosses the river and seems to move away, so it took a farm road toward the town. After a few meters away in a field so I have to go back. In the end, by a rather bad track, by the plain of the River Saelices and a perfect track to the other side (which would take at first) it reached Revillarruz .

Olmosalbos Tower

In Revillarruz return to find the yellow arrows of the Wool Road. We followed a farm road (a section may have problems with mud), which dismantled the path along the railroad Santander-Mediterranean to BOCOG. To the turnoff to share Olmosalbos Castle marks PRC-BU Ausín River Trail.

Greenway Santander-Mediterranean Railway

placid only are the 14 miles of Greenway -Mediterranean Railway Santander to Burgos. In slight rise to a tunnel (600 meters) shortly after Mondúber of the sandwich, and is gentle descent to enter Burgos. Sign up Cardeñadijo ground and asphalt to the end. Very interesting panels explaining the old signs. Upon entering Burgos greenway becomes bike lane ends near the Convent of Santa Dorotea, less than 10 minutes from the cathedral, point end of my Road Lana.

Burgos Cathedral

Burgos Afternoon sightseeing with the visit of rigor to the Cathedral of Burgos (2.50 € for pilgrims) and recently opened Museum of Human Evolution (highly recommended, approximate time of the visit about two and a half hours, and 4 € for pilgrims).

Accommodation: pilgrims hostel "Casa de los Cubes" . € 4. One of the best hostels in the French route. Essential.

Other Accommodations:
- Burgos: There is a wide range of hotels which can be found in turismoburgos.org .

Return to Madrid.

After yesterday afternoon visiting Burgos, is a return to Madrid. Renfe wondered considering the possibility of doing it by train (on regional problems can take the bike without asking first), but was more expensive than bus (€ 29.85) and Rosa de Lima station is quite far from center. Finally I turned the bus with Alsa . Price: € 16.70 + 10 € (extra bike). Duration: 2:45. In Madrid, arrive at the Avenida de América station so I had to pedal to get to the Atocha station.
