Description.

Moratalla to let us follow the course of the river Alharabe, first by the City of San Juan, then skirting the north of Risca Reservoir (where the road leaves San Juan Field ) and overcome the Majal Alto, down through the valley sandwiched between the Sierra de la Muela and the Sierra de los Alamos. If even Moratalla follows the route of the GR-7 up Caravaca, Channel 7.1 Taibilla-GR will be our reference, the fields of the Glens and Altarejos, between the Sierra del Vulture, to the west and the Sierra Gate to the east.

changing landscape as we are losing altitude, leaving the mountains behind. We started in the Great Depression of the Campo de San Juan, surrounded by mountains, to penetrate between the pines of the Sierra de la Muela and touring Alamos Alhárabe the deep valley, and ending with the dry land crop and almond Caravaca Highlands and Moratalla.

Stage simple, short (less than 50 km) and without much drop (much in decline or flat accumulated just over 300 m of ascent), finishing in Caravaca de la Cruz and visit the Shrine of the Holy and Vera Cruz. The greatest difficulty lies in the rise (a short but tough ramp with a very bad sign) and the beginning of the decrease (strong inclination strong and stark rocky) of Majal Alto.

One option is to make the step up Bullas by Northwest Greenway. This would change the organization of the stages in the next few days, you might improve it. Would be: Bullas, Totana (83 km y 1.200 m. de ascenso), Totana-Archena (84 Km. y 630 m. de ascenso), y Archena-Calasparra (60 Km. y 900 m. de ascenso).

Perfil.

Crónica.

Salimos de El Sabinar por la carretera de Nerpio a Caravaca MU-702 hasta Venta Nueva. Hace algo de frío, acentuado por el descenso. Antes del cruce, tomamos una pista asfaltada (se toma un corto atajo sin asfaltar en Casa Velasco) Alhárabe across the river and borders the north of the reservoir and carries Fotuyas Risca.

Calar de la Cueva de la Chapelle and Sierra de los Alamos

Shortly after La Risca leave the asphalt to trace the Majal Alto. The slope is short, with only 600 yards, but with a tough slope, average 10%, which added to firm stony (much like the ballast of the railroad tracks). You must be very hard to pedal up, more if you are loaded. From the top, with a good perspective Calar cut from the Cave of the Chapel on your left, barely sensed the long descent through the valley of Alhárabe hidden by the pine forest.

Calar de la Cueva de la Capilla

In the first kilometers of descent, the steep incline and the firm really bad (field trial bike with a lot of loose stone, broken and large streaks sign) requires extreme caution. Fortunately, as we descend the track is improving a lot. There are two video: the first, somewhat difficult, with a trunk that makes makeshift bridge (I skate with frost and wet my foot), the second I do pedaling easier.

Down the River Gorge Alhárabe

already on the left bank, from the Terrace of Cortijo Carrasca, passed under the cliffs of Water Cenajo Cernida. Mill near the port, connected to the asphalt road that descends to the campsite after crossing gate Door Somogil (large pit created by the river in the limestone).

Cenajo Cernida Water. Rio Alhárabe

From the campsite, there are six miles by road (it goes by various lodgings, including the Hotel La Tejera ) to Moratalla. At the entrance, leave the GR-7 continues to Calasparra by Almizra Road. As the stage is short and I have time, take the opportunity to take a turn in the old town and climb to the church of La Asunción and the castle-fortress.

Moratalla Castle

From here you follow the Canal Taibilla (that we crossed just before reaching Moratalla) marked as GR-7.1, to Caravaca de la Cruz, in many cases following the Canal Road (track without paved channel service enabled). We rode through the fields of the Glens and Altarejos, right on the border between areas of Highlands Moratalla and Calasparra (rainfed and almond trees, vines and some olive trees, with a stand of pine trees) to the east, Sierra del Vulture (Vulture and the Cerro Gordo) to the west, leaving behind the Sierra de la Muela.

Taibilla Canal Road

Moratalla Leaving the C-415 (low traffic, shoulder width) to be Caravaca, and just before a sharp bend to right continue along the old path that leads us to bond, in the Farmhouse of the runway Agüica Old Canal Taibilla (marked with wooden posts). Near Genaro House passes under the B-36 and is a short stretch of very nice trail. Collado del Panizo past (a short stretch of road avoidable) was taken along Canal Road quarries, for from the Bañuelo, a high, see for the first time Caravaca de la Cruz, and very close.

Reaching Caravaca de la Cruz

Caravaca is reached by the Camino Viejo de Calasparra under the castle and the Santuario de la Vera Cruz , entering Puentecilla Street that leads to the Plaza del Arco. In the tourist office tell me that there is the possibility of sleeping in the lodge of the Marquis de Las Fuentes (calling from the office to be with the manager to open), and there I go. On the Spot in Las Fuentes del Marqués Trail passes Bejar, integrated into the Ecotourism Itinerary Caravaca de la Cruz-Collado Almacilón.

In the afternoon take the opportunity to visit and go quietly to Caravaca de la Vera Cruz Shrine . The small chapel is exposed opens every half hour. A beautiful shrine save some fragments of the Vera Cruz. It is a magical place.

Shrine of the Blessed. and Vera Cruz

place of pilgrimage since ancient times, in 1998 the Holy See granted the sanctuary a Holy Year in perpetuity to be held every seven years (Last in 2010), thus becoming one of the few places have this privilege, along with Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela and Santo Toribio de Liebana. Thank the good treatment at Peregrine Point of Care (located at the headquarters of the Confraternity of the Blessed. And Vera Cruz).
