Despite crossing the industrial hub of tailings (water treatment plant municipal solid waste, power station, oil refinery, fertilizer plant and port facilities including huge) the landscape of the ridge just behind Murcia does not disappoint. Once completed, and after passing through Cartagena, we return to the tranquility of riding through the mountains, lonely paths and tracks, including almond blossom, the sunny side of the Cerro de Roland and the Sierra de la Muela, the rise in Las Lomas the Carrasca, with spectacular views of the Campo de Cartagena and the Mar Menor, and the laid down by the Rambla del Canar in Peñas Blancas.
Stage labored, with nearly 1,000 m. climb 60 kilometers, consisting of a succession small little ports (up to six short-no more than 4 kilometers, not very steep ramp but with some very hard). The most significant advancement that takes us from The Escarihuelas to Las Lomas Carrasca (9.5 km and 450 m climb). Some stretches of rocky terrain, climb the Castillo de San Julián and last few miles to the Lomas Carrasca and some very hard-ramps close to 20% - puts the finishing touch.

Profile.
Chronicle.
Leaving Union for the Public Market, home of the famous Festival Cante de las Minas, taking a track, with FEVE Station, which follows the railway until the Apeadero Hope. With the loss of track, to save me trouble in the stop cross the tracks (so be careful not pedestrian) to go to the N-332nd (coming from La Union and which has bike lanes) and continue to roundabout take the road N-345 which leads to Portman.

A first oil refinery starts the industrial core itself. Increases the heavy traffic to take the N-343 (two lanes, shoulder width) leading to the basin of tailings. We are surrounded by petro-chemical plants, refineries, fertilizer plants and power plant. From the harbor the N-333 (more quiet and that does not support heavy traffic) runs along the port facilities in the direction of Cartagena.
Once the refinery Enagas leave behind the rush and traffic industries to trace a track created as alternative route to escape the disaster valley. Good views of Cala Cortina and the Bay of Cartagena. The road, very rocky but not yet acceptable, amount to a hill near the Castillo de San Julián. The strongest can climb it because the view must be tremendous, I very day ahead, I decided to go down to Cartagena .

preparing the trip, one of the places that I really wanted to visit was Cartagena. Depending on the stage and made her decide if the end of stage. I arrived very early, around 11:00, just 25 miles in the legs and enough time to get to Puerto de Mazarrón. At the end I choose to. I will come back another time to visit the Roman Theatre.

cross the city from Main Street take a quiet stroll. Cartagena is out of the Barrio de la Concepción after crossing the Rambla de Benipila, the N-332-1 (some traffic) towards Tentegorra. Turn to the left, to climb, reach Tentegorra Park. There are bike path or you can follow a path parallel to the road. A curious fact in the park there are some water tanks belonging to Channel Taibilla, future partner of the route within a few days.

Bordering Cabezo Roldan |
From Tentegorra part paved road towards Los Diaz, where the asphalt ends and begins the ascent to Las Escarihuelas. Second day small port (1.2 km climb to 70 meters) from the sunny side of Cabezo Roldan, per track (PR trail marks, marked by white painted stones). The descent into Las Escarihuelas is fast and fun, but it is short. Ahead, the challenge of the day, the long ascent to the Carrrasca Lomas (9.5 km and climb 450 meters) with two distinct parts, from Las Perín Escarihuelas to and from Perín to Tallante corner.
|
Sierra de la Muela down to Escarihuelas |
The first part, entirely on paved roads without traffic, local roads still lead by Galifa Corner (short but very hard ramp reaching Jarapa Slope), the E-22 to La Torre de Nicolas Perez and E-16 (section of canyon, the washing of Perín) to Perín. All for the sunny side of the Sierra de la Muela, including dry fields, terraces with almond blossom.

Cartajena from the Loma de la Carrasca |
With almost all the work done, dizzying descent Tallante corner, picking up momentum to crown the Collado de la Cruz (for the access road to El Canar, -9% rise in half-hard-but very short -0.8 km - which goes almost unnoticed).
From the village of El Cañar connects to the full track down the Rambla del Canar to its mouth on the Mediterranean at the height of Isla Plana. Deserved reward for all efforts, is a pleasant walk under the walls of Peñas Blancas. We ended with a greenhouse area with the impressive Sierra de la Muela behind us and closing the Bay of Mazarron Punta de la Azohía.

From Isla Plana Beach is mere formality as the road E-22 to El Alamillo, and a stretch of the N-322 to enter Puerto de Mazarrón .
